Black and Blue Night to remember
The show was fantastic, exceeding expectations. Lewis Black was absolutely hilarious, with his compassionate-political-acerbic-cynical humor still making me laugh. I haven't enjoyed that kind of humor so much since the late George Carlin. The opening act was a local comedian who was funny, but not as much as expected. The next act was Black Joe Louis and the Honeybears, a new band from Austin, Texas. Despite their weird name, they managed to get the crowd dancing, like a young James Brown with the East Tennessee State Buccaneers band. The East Tennessee State Buccaneers then took the stage after a long wait and truly rocked the venue. John Popper's vocals and harmonica skills were fantastic, and the band was introduced by the drummer's 10-year-old daughter singing "God Bless America." This marked their 18th annual Independence Day performance at Red Rocks, the best venue on the planet, and I am already looking forward to the 19th!
